Alva’s Education Foundation celebrated a grand Independence day function at the Sundari Ananda Alva campus Vidyagiri. Over 16,500 students and 2000 staff members from 19 different institutes under the AEF took part in the celebrations. The media claimed that this celebration by AEF stands next to the celebrations at Red fort, New Delhi in terms of number of people participating. 3000 students came dressed in the tri-color and created a spectacular event. The students released 5,000 helium balloons into air to commemorate the country’s freedom from the foreign rule.
This year the flag was unfurled by Justice N. Santosh Hegde, former Justice of Supreme Court of India, Former Karnataka Lokayukta. Later he addressed the gathering and spoke on the necessity of celebrating the Independence Day. He said that by celebrating we display our solidarity and unity and reiterate in our mind that we live in an Independent country. He added that unfortunately the values and ideals that were held in high esteem during the independence are now getting diluted. Corruption has deeper roots which has made inroads in the mindset and ideologies of people resulting in fall in the ethical level of people.
